In the Victorian Age, women were not supposed to be so "advant garde" as to become authors, so often female writers took a man's name as their "Nom De Plume". So, Mary Ann Evans took the name George Elliot. Emily Bronte and Charlotte Bronte also took male names during part of their careers.
