Before the Industrial Revolution the only illumination available was candlelight, candles with open flames or behind glass lanterns being the only light. Ballerinas, in flimsy tulle skirts, danced before candles, which ringed stages. As they whirled around, they often got too close to the flames and the unfortunate young women would become horrific human torches.
Similarly, fashionable women, wearing crinolines/hoop skirts, which would extend outward six feet from their waists, often got too close to open flame.
