There are quite a few theories as to the origin of the Rom. Some say they were hundreds of talented entertainers sent to a famous maharajah, as a gift. They were given land and seed to grow crops, but perhaps they didn't like being owned... Who would???... In a year they were gone. There is also a theory that they wandered because of a curse put on them.
By the 1500s the Rom reached the British Isles. They would "tell fortunes," stopping at the homes of the rich, as happens in "Jane Eyre," --- or, they might offer to sharpen knives, tell stories, sell handmade items, or dance, sing and play music.
